NUVIA and the Ministry of Defence complete a key milestone in the delivery of the Reactor Pressure Vessel Transport Container

NUVIA UK’s Engineering, Procurement, Construction & Programmes team has successfully completed a critical step in delivering the Reactor Pressure Vessel Transport Container (RPVTC) to the Ministry of Defence (MOD) by issuing the formal license application to the regulator for review.

This is under the multi-million-pound, high profile contract with the MOD to design, manufacture and license a transport and storage container to support the ‘Submarine Dismantling Project’ (SDP).

This step is the culmination of many hours work, where the NUVIA and MOD teams have worked collaboratively and tirelessly to overcome the challenges and constraints caused by the pandemic and produce the RPVTC detail design and license application on time.

The combined use container will weigh over 50 tonnes and includes all necessary handling equipment. It will perform a fundamental role in ensuring the safe transportation of each decommissioned submarine Reactor Pressure Vessel from the Rosyth and Devonport Naval Dockyards to their storage site.

The project has been undertaken in a very collaborative manner between NUVIA and MOD, who plan to receive the Certificate of Approval (CoA) from the Defence Nuclear Safety Regulator next year. This CoA will enable the safe and secure transportation of the RPV to its interim storage.
